A lot of us do it, we login to Facebook or MySpace, to keep in touch with our friends past and present. It’s nice, for me its almost like a tattered safety blanket, and leaving college doesn’t have to be so sad because if I need to catch up with anyone it’s just a click away. I really enjoy these sites and otherwise like them, because they keep me close with everyone, and I can watch them all move on as I too move on, but no one is ever forgotten. Ok, great, but enough with all the sentimental stuff. I do harbor a bit of, well how can I say this, disdain for the MySpaces and Facebooks of the world as some are now using these sites to become famous. Its a good idea, and I support artists and bands that I come across on myspace who are talented, but then there are the Tila Tequilas of the world who use it to promote their talent-less selves. It just seems like we’re in a world where if you can get your name out there for any reason, then you’re now famous. What happened to people being recognized for actually doing something? Like Paris Hilton, what does she do…seriously answer the question, does she do anything worthy of merit…no. Where are the young people like Prince, Dr. King, or even Spielburg? They or getting older and some are already gone, who is going to take their places? Nicole Ritche? Come on. Part of this epidemic of idiots being in the spotlight is the Media…duh. But its our fault too, including myself. Why do we pay attention? If we stopped buying mags with these tards showcased in them, or watching these get famous quick reality shows, and showed the Media we want to hear more about real issues and people worth knowing, the self-obsessed do-nothings would dissappear, or realize what they do is not cute and try something else to keep our attention.
Like when Lindsay Lohan said the paparazzi are keeping her from getting an Oscar, I almost died laughing. She hasn’t earned one. Underage drinking, driving your car into non-moving objects and snorting cocaine are not Oscar worthy moves. How about making a movie with some substance…that might work, oh and give a worthwhile performance while your at it. I actually liked Lindsay, and after Mean Girls, which was quite clever, she looked promising…then she got retarded. I mean look at other young starlets like Scarlett Johansen, she’s a good actress, beautiful, and she keeps her profile positive. Or Natalie Portman who is extremely intelligent and talented. Instead of blaming 3rd parties like the paparazzi they take control of their own images and make smart choices on how they are viewed by the media, and take good roles.
I guess I just feel like people like Lindsay and Paris are multiplying, not just in the eye of the public but around us as well. Its not their fault, its ours. We need to teach our kids and ourselves on what is worth publicizing, what is worth emulating, and live up to those ideals. No more average, no more getting by and accepting ignorant obnoxious behavior from them or anyone. Let’s promote people worth promoting.
